After 6 weeks my ankle is still weak, so very weak. I had no idea that stepping off a curb incorrectly would cause such a dramatic set back in my training. Needless to say I will not be running in any 5 or 10ks soon. I need to focus on healing and strengthening my ankle before I can begin to move forward with my training. I am also finding alternate ways to exercise (instead of running). I am currently doing a few work out DVDs at home including:
Winsor Pilates – which is an oldie but a goodie, I love her abs course and it doesn’t use my ankle at all. Hallelujah. (apparently Miley Cirus does Winsor … I don’t keep up with her goings on, but when I imaged searched for Winsor Pilates she was all over the Google.)
Fluidity: Seat & Thigh Video – This video does require the use of my ankle, so I complete the moves as tolerated on my injured ankle (left) and then do the same number of reps on the right ankle. Even though this is a serious leg/glutes workout, it also works shoulders and arms a bit.
Jillian Michaels: 6 Week Six-Pack – I have a serious love/hate with Jillian. I love that she can seriously whip my body into shape in 6 weeks. I hate that while doing the training I want to kick her in her perfect abs. (Whoa, where did that come from you ask? Do the first viedo… then we will talk.) **FYI: This streams free on Amazon Video for Prime members 🙂
I have yet to find a shoulder/arm DVD that I really like. Anybody have a good suggestion?
I would ask, “Is it just my house that has been hit by craziness?” First I sprained my ankle and still cannot run, and now the flu. I would ask that question, save the for the myriad of FB and Instagram posts I am reading from personal friends and blogger friends who are experiencing weirdness too. I know I am not the only one that is being set back in my goals, but strangely, that comradery has really kept me from discouragement. Knowing that I am not the only one being challenged to keep my goals even in the face of trials and set backs helps me to see that I am not alone and therefore should not give-up. So, even though I could not run this week, I decided to work on my goals from the sofa. I know that sounds weird , but I am a hardcore prepper/planner/list-maker. So, I know what I need and what I want… I decided to go virtual window shopping for it. I need a better way to hold my iphone on runs or better headphones.
I currently have a Misfit shine from Best Buy (you can read my review here) to track my steps during the day and that works for getting steps in on my off days. I use my iPhone 5 with the Runkeeper app to track my runs. (See over on the sidebar… my last run was sooo long ago. le sigh.) I love that runkeeper let’s my use my music library to run to.
It keeps me super motivated. Here’s my issue. I cannot for the life of me keep my phone in a place where I don’t somehow get the earphone wires all tangled up. I wish there was no cord so I could have my phone stashed in my runner’s pack or my waterbottle that has a phone case attached. (I know, fancy.)
Since I already have cool gadgets to hold my phone, I think that blue tooth headphones are my answer. Check out the amazing Yurbuds at Bestbuy
I wish they made the wireless yurbuds in the amazing white and aqua combo too (available here):
How cute are those?!
I love the idea of not having a cord get in my way as I am trekking along. It might be the most annoying thing about running. Other than injuries. Since I am in week 3 of my training I am still trying to figure out what works for me as far as keeping me moving. Studies have shown that music can increase the intensity and duration of a workout by as much as 15%. Which does ZIP for me when I get the cord caught and have to put the earbud back in. Or when they hurt and I don’t want to run with them anyways. These seem cool because yurbuds was founded by an Ironman Triathlete and a 24-time marathoner who experienced the same issues. Who knew I was just like an Ironman? (I am totally laught right now. I am so funny.) These Stereo-Bluetooth® earphones lock in place comfortably so they never hurt and never fall out. They are sweat and water resistant and with the wind-blocking microphone designed for call clarity you can chat with your friends during your run. (You can, I can’t hold a conversation after the first mile.)With a battery life of up to 6 hours and provides visual and audible indicators when running low and comes with a charging cable so you can plug them in at night and be good to go for your AM run.
I need these!
Right now Best Buy is offering 20% off all Yurbuds when you use the coupon code:yurbuds20off and get a $5 Best Buy Gift Card when you purchase a qualifying Health and Fitness product at a Best Buy Mobile Specialty Store! (Offers valid in-store and online 1/19/14 – 2/22/14. ) So these little beauties could be less than $100 before taxes if you combine both offers. Nice!
Are you wanting workout gear or accessories right now? What are you longing for?
Thereviewer has been compensated in the form of a Best Buy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free.
So this weeks training did not go exactly as planned. After finding friends in my new town to run with (look at me reaching that goal I set last week in this post) on Sunday. I totally busted out the phone mid-run to capture a photo of my girls as we trucked along:
And having a great run. Monday came. And it was a total case of the Mondays. (Bonus points: Can you name that a movie reference?) So I was running, racing my husband actually, and stepped off a curb wrong and did this
After a few days of the swelling and pain continuing, I decided to take the sage advice of friends and family and go get an x-Ray
Thankfully nothing is broken or fractured. Severe sprain and planter facetious requiring 5 days of rest in a soft cast. I was so bummed when the doc told me I had to be in a cast. He actually said “Geez, what is up with you athletes?! You play hard! You need to rest hard too.” Eeeeert. Hit the brakes. Wait. What? Dd he just call me an athlete? Awesome. I do not know if I have ever been. Allied an athlete as an adult. Actually, I know I haven’t. So I was feeling so awesome to be called an athlete that I was totally willing to submit to whatever the doc had to say. Haha! So I have been trying my best to rest.
Today we are headed to Arizona for a work trip for my hubby and since my BFF lives there the whole family is going with him. FYI the bestie is Acacia who you guys met yesterday in this profile post. She is a huge inspiration and encouragement in my life. Not only in the health and fitness realm (seriously, read her profile, she is an inspiration to single-moms, moms, and women everywhere) but an inspiration and encouragement to me in all aspects of life. She is that friend who, though we live 6 hrs apart, I can say “I need you here ASAP.” She will say, “Let me pack a bag. I will be there in 6 hours.” No questions asked. Like a sister. I think everyone needs a best friend like that. Life is so much better when you have someone you can count on to love you enough to put their life on hold to love you through those times when you cannot image how to move forward.
Happy Friday my loves! This was the first week of my 1/2 marathon training. I also moved this week, to a whole new city in a different county, over 1.5 hours away from my last house. So this is no across-town move, it was a major ordeal. This move has been crazy… but I have been keeping with my training! I have learned a few things this week:
1. I need to remember that I am not at the beach anymore! It is about 20 degrees cooler here on average then our last home. No more 65 degree mornings. 45 degrees is what I am running in and I need to dress accordingly.
1. I need to remember to turn Runkeeper off when I am finished. I am killing my Pace Average when I leave it on for 24 hours after a run. Ugh. I am not even logging those into Runkeeper because I feel like an idiot. But then I go and tell you guys about it… so I should have logged one so I would have at least had a photo for this post!
2. I cannot run with my German Shepherd, Kara. I love that dog, but man. She is afraid of every dog that barks. Every time she is running along side of me and another dog barks, she darts to the opposite side of me… and tangles the leash around my calves. I almost ate pavement HARD yesterday. Ugh, no thanks. I will let the hubby walk her, it seems safer for us all. Which is ironic because I was running with her for protection… but she is unsafe to run with. Bummer!
The map below shows exactly where she tried to take me down. As you can see from the map, I had a different path mapped for this run, but after the “mishap” – X marks the spot! – I decided to turn around and go home.
3. I need a running partner. I am enjoying the fitness aspect, but my most enjoyable runs, best paces, and longest runs happen with other people. So, on Sunday I will be running with a friend! Whoohoo! I will let you guys know how it goes!
Hey guys! So, for those of you who know me, this is gonna come as quite a shock – I am going to train for a 1/2 Marathon. *gasp* I will give you a minute to digest that. I know, *boom* mind blown.
For the past year I have been eating clean (read: no dairy, limited sugar, and limited refined carbohydrates) and green juicing. I feel great and everyone says I look good (which is always nice) So here is my before photo from a few days ago:
